Islamabad: Amid intolerance in Mod’s regime in India, Senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, was murdered on Tuesday night at her Ideal Home Layout residence in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar by unidentified assailants riding a bicycle, reports said.
Gauri Lankesh was known as a fearless and outspoken journalist. She was a staunch critic of right-wing political ideology. Last year, she was convicted of criminal defamation by a lawmaker of India’s ruling Bharatia Janata Party for her writing about Hindu nationalists.
Although the motivation for the killing was not immediately clear, but many civil society members across India were of the opinion that the motive behind it was radical hindu extremists. The manner in which Gauri was killed was eerily similar to the way in which rationalist MM Kalburgi was killed two years ago.
Meanwhile political leaders, journalists and activists took to Twitter to express their outrage and denounce intolerance and any threat to free speech.
Karnataka state´s chief minister Siddaramaiah called it an “assassination on democracy”.
Gauri was the daughter of writer, translator and journalist P Lankesh. She was a veteran editor of Lankesh Patrike and columnist in both Kannada and English, and was a vocal critic of the right wing.
In 2015, an Indian scholar, Malleshappa M. Kalburgi, was killed in a similar way, also in Bengaluru. He was a critic of religious superstition.
